Tuesday May 11, 2010Baseball's Brian Johnson Named To John Olerud Watch List

University of Florida freshman left-hander/designated hitter Brian Johnson was named to the 25-player Watch List for the annual John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, it was announced by the College Baseball Foundation.

 

A native of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Johnson made the listing of the 25 top two-way players in college baseball, one of four players in the Southeastern Conference to make the list (Jake Smith, Alabama; Brett Eibner, Arkansas; Braden Kapteyn, Kentucky). The award will be presented at the annual college baseball awards show on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of a week-long schedule of festivities sponsored by the College Baseball Foundation, including the induction ceremony for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame.

 

A two-time SEC Freshman of the Week recipient, Johnson is 4-2 with a 3.74 earned run average and has registered 38 strikeouts in 53.0 innings on the mound. At the plate, he has a .385 (15-for-39) batting average with 10 RBI, including grand slams against defending national champion LSU and Alabama. In league play, Johnson has a 3-1 mark with a 3.05 ERA and is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with eight RBI and seven runs.

 

No. 4 Florida (33-12/17-7 SEC) returns to action at McKethan Stadium on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. by hosting Florida Atlantic (31-17/19-8 Sun Belt).
